Aerial Rivington Terraced Gardens were developed by the late Lord Leverhulme  over twenty years following his acquisition of the site for his home in 1900.   The initial planning and design was undertaken by Jonathan Simpson and expanded by Thomas Mawson.   His review and development of the architectural and landscape design had a major influence on the gardens, although Lord Leverhulme himself played a considerable part.  The Gardens were extraordinary, particularly the successful planting in a hostile environment, with many hidden features strategically placed where it was possible to enjoy extensive views.  The horticultural influences came particularly from overseas with the creation of Japanese and Italian Gardens.
Pergola The original house and bungalow have disappeared but the main features of the Gardens are still evident, although now overgrown with many derelict structures.  Despite this the Gardens are treasured by all who visit them and are well-used by the local community.

The proposals retained the spirit of the original designs and to enable the increasing numbers of visitors to enjoy and appreciate the Gardens in safety and free of charge.

Waterfall A detailed Management Plan for the Gardens was drawn up by the consultancy in association with a specialist multi-disciplinary team.  An advisory committee was consulted throughout the project.  The proposals included rebuilding features such as Loggias, Summerhouses, Stone House Lodge, Japanese Tea House and Pagodas and the restoration of the Italian and Japanese Gardens, The Dell and Waterfalls.  Key areas were proposed to be reinstated, others managed naturally and the remainder retained as wilderness and wildwoods.  The overall capital cost was estimated to be £2.6m.
Loggia Access to the Terraced Gardens was thought to be an important consideration as they are situated above Lever Park on a steep hillside with a moorland edge location.  Some security fencing was proposed to control access and provide security for the restored features.  Gates were to be installed at main entrance points to the Gardens that would be locked from dusk to dawn. Part of a public right of way was to be diverted, but a new equally suitable alternative route was to be constructed to permit continued free access.  The proposals formed part of the larger Lever Park project and discussions between the partners is continuing.
